General Pierce Manning Butler Young Born: 11-15-1836, Spartanburg, SC
Died: 7-6-1896, New York City, NY
Buried: Oak Hill Cemetery, Cartersville

"Dashing and gallant," with forceful military bearing, Young is credited with being the youngest major general to serve in the Confederate Army. Entering into politics, Young was the first Democrat from Georgia to be seated in Congress following the war. Elected to three terms, he served on the Military Affais Committee and the US Military Board of Visitors. In 1885, he was appointed consul-general to St. Petersburg by Grover Cleveland, and in 1893 as minister to Guatemala and Honduras. At his death, he was the commander of the Georgia Division of the United Confederate Veterans.
