General William Tatum Wofford Born: 6-28-1824, Habersham Co., GA

Wofford served as a cavalry captain in the Mexican War; was twice elected to the Georgia House of Representatives; and, as a delegate to the Southern Commercial Convention, worked to delay Georgia's withdrawl from the Union. Commissioned a colonel in the Eighteenth GA Regiment, he succeeded to command of the brigade the next year. Following the Civil War, Wofford helped organize two railroads in northwest Georgia and devoted much of his wealth and energy to promoting education. During his political career, Wofford championed an adequate school system, creation of juvenile reformatory, and protection of black suffrage in Georgia.
