Born: 10-16-1847, Oak Bowery, AL Died: 10-15-1906, Little Rock, AR Buried: Oak Hill Cemetery, Cartersville Married: Laura McElwain The most famous and celebrated evangelist of his time, Jones began his career as a circuit rider in the Northwest Georgia Methodist Conference, attracting a national congregation following a revival in Nashville in 1885. Jones eventually split with the church over doctrine, but continued as an independent evangelist, preaching the simplicity of living the good life with a message as simple as "Quit Your Meanness." A life-long resident of Cartersville, Jones's home "Roselawn," on Cherokee Avenue, is today a house museum. |
