Opportunities to Volunteer
Updated June 15, 2005

The Etowah Valley Historical Society offers numerous opportunities for its members to become more actively involved. Active involvement by our members makes a difference in how our society is perceived by, and functions in the community. We can make a difference, and so can you. We hope you'll find something that interests you among our various committees, and that you'll consider becoming a volunteer within EVHS. Just click on the link below to email us your volunteer request and we'll be in touch with you soon.

Allatoona Pass
Members of the Allatoona Pass Battlefield Committee are responsible for the preservation and maintenance of the Allatoona Pass Battlefield site. This includes clearing trails and expanding the accessibility of the park by visitors. On occasion, members may be asked to lead special tours.

Courthouse Office
Located in the historic 1903 gold-domed county courthouse, the EVHS office is first and foremost a research facility. Of equal importance is its function as a base of operations for the society. The Office Committee is responsible for greeting the public, assisting visitors with their historical and genealogical queries, and maintaining a relaxed business atmosphere. Committee members are asked to contribute three or more hours a month to keeping the office open, and receive training in equipment use and maintenance (easy), filing, and other general office procedures. Members may be asked to assist the chairman with mailouts, inventory, and other office procedures as the need arises.

Family Tree Climbers
The Genealogy Committee meets quarterly at 7:00pm on the 1st Saturday of March, June, September and December in the EVHS office, and meetings are open to the general public. Committee members may be asked to contribute program ideas and help engage speakers. On occasion, member's knowledge of genealogy and specific family lines may see them called upon by the Research Committee to assist in answering queries.

Friendship Cemetery
The long neglected Friendship Cemetery has been cleared of debris and shrubbery. EVHS has plans to build trails, erect signs, and have a fence built by the owner.

Inventory of Historic Sites
This is a county-wide project. For information call Mary Norton at (770) 607-9359.

Membership
The Membership Committee is responsible for the organized solicitation of prospective members. This may include membership drives in the community and among other organizations, and locating contacts to keep abreast of new residents to Bartow County. Committee members may be asked to greet and introduce new members at meetings, and assist the chairman as needed at membership meetings.

Membership Meetings
The Membership Meetings Committee is responsible for seeing to the details of all society meetings and social gatherings. This includes working with hosts and hostesses, engaging speakers or entertainment, and coordinating with a caterer or otherwise providing for refreshments. Committee members may be asked to greet visitors at meetings, collect monies at the door, and help set up or decorate. Dinner meetings are often held in historic homes, and a minimum of six meetings are held yearly, beginning with a social gathering in December and ending with the Annual Business & Dinner meeting in October.

Newsletter
The EVHS Newsletter is published four times yearly, and includes original researched articles of historic significance to Bartow County, reprinted material from our archives, committee reports, meeting reports, and news of the society's current activities and interests. Committee members are encouraged to submit original material and photographs our readers would find interesting, and to solicit the same from others for publication.

Research
Research Committee members may be asked to conduct deed searches, read old county newspapers on microfilm, or otherwise locate historical information at the request of visitors and other EVHS committees. Familiarity with local history and events is not essential, as knowledge will increase with each research request. Instruction on deed searching and the use of microfilm is provided (easy). Members are encouraged to pursue their own research interests and contribute their findings to the society's newsletter and archives.

Tour of Homes
The Tour of Homes Committee is responsible for the planning, organization and execution of the biannual Tour of Historic Homes. Committee members are asked to participate in all aspects of the project, including researching homes and properties, serving as hosts and hostesses within the homes, and shuttling ticket holders back and forth.
