Committee News and Reports
Last updated on June 15, 2005

From welcoming new members, to aiding in research, to preservation of cemeteries and a Civil War battlefield, EVHS committee members enjoy making a difference in the community through active involvement in the society. Their tireless efforts to increase awareness and understanding of our important historical resources are rewarded every time a new member joins them in their shared interest. EVHS hopes you'll consider making a difference by joining us in our efforts through active involvement as an EVHS Volunteer.

Allatoona Pass Battlefield Project
Chaired By Ed Hill & Guy Parmenter

The Civil War Preservation Trust of Washington, D. C. recently presented a report to the nation entitled, "America’s Most Endangered Battlefields." This report identifies the ten most threatened Civil War sites and what can be done to preserve them. Included on the list is Allatoona.

The announcement by the CWPT is extremely important to the ongoing preservation of Allatoona Battlefield, begun by EVHS in 1994. The Etowah Valley Historical Society will now receive the financial support and assistance of this nationally known group, which to date has acquired 11,000 acres of battlefield land over sixty different battlefields in sixteen states.

See the EVHS Community Projects page for a brief history of the Allatoona Pass Battlefield Restoration.

Courthouse Office
Chaired By Linda Trentham

Have you visited the office since its expansion? The two rooms formerly occupied by Social Security, and generously given to EVHS for use as office space, are now furnished and in use as a meeting room and an executive office. We hope you'll stop by one afternoon and check it out.

We continue to seek volunteers to help keep the office open. If you are interested in donating just one afternoon a month (1:30-4:30), please contact us at 770-606-8862.

Historic Awareness Sign Program
Chaired By Dianne Tate

The recent initiative by the City of Cartersville to establish a preservation ordinance has sparked a renewed interest in the Heritage Sign Program, and the office has been flooded with calls requesting information. Currently, over seventy-five signs have been purchased since the program began in 1992, with many framed signs being displayed inside homes. Awareness of our precious historic resources continues to grow, and we continue to encourage all historic home owners to purchase a sign for their property, especially EVHS members.

See the EVHS Ongoing Projects page for information about purchasing a Heritage Sign for your home or business.
